Information on loss of

Hi,

Bought this portrait on Ebay. It shows a pilot and has writing on the back explaining he was Gunter Hesse and that he was lost on 30.12.1940 over Bilbao?

Can anyone provide information on his loss?

Thanks

Rick

Re: Information on loss of

The aircraft had suffered a serious malfunction with its navigational aids during return from a sortie to England and apparently flew on until its fuel was exhausted.

Re: Information on loss of

Hi all,
I have searched in the local newspapers and found that the plane did not fall in Bilbao but in Güeñes, a small village at 12 Km from Bilbao. The article says only that the plane collided at 4:00 am amidst a thick fog against the townhall building. The only casualties were the four crew members, whose bodies were sent to the french border during the next day.
As the área is very hilly (some heights up to 1.000 m) I suppose that the plane could touch some hill before falling without control.
Best regards.
