Capt. Kurt William Kunau, Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia

Hello everyone,

I’m looking for information about Capt. Kurt William Kunau, who is buried in Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia. From an obituary in the ”Florida News” he passed away in Miami, FL July 24th, 1965. During WWII he was a flight instructor (I believe at Dorr Field, Florida) and later a pilot with ”Air Transport Command”. He moved to Miami in 1957 from Lansing, Illinois.

Any further information about Capt. Kunau will be greatly appreciated,

Mieszko

Re: Capt. Kurt William Kunau, Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia

Kurt William Kunau was born in Danzig on 6 April, 1906.

It appears he first arrived in the US (New York) on the ship SS Pulaski which sailed on 29 April 1931 from Gdynia and arrived on 11 May 1931. He listed his occupation as pilot.

Another arrival is listed on 18 July, 1933 from Mexico with his wife Clarice. They had been married in Chicago on July 31, 1932. He listed his occupation as commercial aviation. Not clear if he had been working in Mexico (possibly based in Mexico City) or this was just a visit.

He became as US citizen 9 November 1933.

During the war he shows up several times as a passenger on ATC flights. He was then in the army. Possible he was working as a ferry pilot and these were the return flights with several ATC ferry crews returning to the US after flying planes overseas.

If you PM me an email address, I could send you some of the documents found on Ancestry.com.

A few details to add: Son of Ernst and Martha Franziska Kunau.

He declared his intention to become citizen of the US on 9 November 1933, this was granted on 25 April 1939.

He married Clarice Tuchocki, born 10 December 1899 in Chicago. According to the 1940 census they lived together with her parents Frank and Helen Tuchocki and her brother Louis in Chicago. She died 15 November 1990 in Miami.

Hello Rainer, Bruce, and Rolland,

Thank you all for your replies! Kurt Kunau was planning a non stop flight from Chicago to Warsaw, and his back ground seems to explain the destination of the planned flight.

Thanks once again,
Mieszko
