Re: damaged Wellington - T2739

Squadron Code LN indicates No 99 Sqdn.
They had the aircraft from 19 September 1940. Form 78 shows Repaired between 18 August and 4 October 1941 https://218squadron.files.wordpress....8/img_4700.jpg
but there may be more information that those more expert than I can deduce.

On the 16/7 August they were involved in attacking Duisberg and lost X9700 LN@X so it could have been damaged then.

Re: damaged Wellington - T2739

Hello,

The No.99 Squadron history, Each Tenacious/A E Edgerley/Square One/1993/p.129, mentions the following in respect to the events of 16/17 August 1941:

Bad weather prevented further operational flying until the night of 16/17 August (1941), when eleven Wellingtons took off to attack Duisburg. Six crews claimed to have found and bombed their target or targets nearby but, owing to accurate searchlights and anti-aircraft concentrations, results of the bombing could not be seen. of the remainder, one aircraft bombed Haamstede airfield and another had its bomb release gear shot away, causing the bombs to be 'hung up'. Sergeant Munro and crew bombed an unidentified town, but were unable to observe the results of their bombing. Pilot Officer Dickenson's aircraft was attacked by an enemy aircraft whilst making the run-up to its target, one of the crew members* being severely wounded. After a difficult return journey, Dickenson finally landed his aircraft at Newmarket. The eleventh aircraft was attacked by three enemy aircraft whilst held in exceptionally large concentrations searchlights. Two of the Wellington's crew members were wounded and the aircraft was severely damaged, making it extremely difficult for the captain (Sgt Coleman)**to bring the aircraft home, finally landing at Ford, Sussex.

** 954634 Sgt (Pilot) E COLEMAN - PoW, No.99 Sqn, 28/29 September 1941 - Wellington IC X9761 (Frankfurt) - BCL2/153 & http://aircrewremembered.com/coleman-e.html

Not suggesting these events relate to Wellington T2739. There is at least one other photo of Wellington T2739. It can be seen in the following books: Wellington At War/Chaz Bowyer/Ian Allan,1982/p.14 (mentions, early 1941), and Vickers-Armstrongs Wellington/Ken Delve/Crowood Press/1998/p.57 (caption mentions April, 1941!).

Can anyone add to the above?

Col.
