I understood plainly the issue, I got the same feeling for a writer in one of the french mag. I didn't recall such thing in his previous books.

Actually, I've opened my last several books in the exact same way (HELL'S ANGELS, FIGHTER GROUP, VANISHED HERO and THE MEN WHO KILLED THE LUFTWAFFE). It's a sort of emotional hook that sets the stage for what's coming. Most people seem to like it.
