Spitfires ER597and JG476
Can anyone tell me whether either of these Spitfire Vs was tropicalised or had its wings clipped? Bother were flown by 111 Squadron in early 1943.

Re: Spitfires ER597and JG476
Hello Keith,
AB's RAF serial number series has Spitfire V - ER597 - 93 - NFT Oct 43. Spitfire VIII - JG476 - 601/145 - SOC 31.12.46 Alex |

Re: Spitfires ER597and JG476
ER597 will certainly have been tropicalised, but probably not had its wings clipped - but might have done. Most photos of this time show Spitfires with the wingtips still on.
JG476 is an incorrect serial, belonging to a MK.VIII which wasn't delivered until November 1943. Perhaps a Mk.V JG746? In which case the same comments apply. |

Re: Spitfires ER597and JG476
sorry chaps, I was having a "senior" moment (i.e. a moment of confusion). The serial was JG746, a Spitfire Vc.
On the clipped wing issue there do appear quite a few photos of 145, 601 and 40 SAAF with these but there are no photos of 111 Squadron Spitfire Vs in Tunisia that I have found. |
