Unidentified French Aircraft - Photo

Hello All,

Currently on ebay at http://www.ebay.de/itm/Von-Wehrmacht...#ht_1055wt_960 is a pphoto of a captured french aircraft, of at least to me, an unknown type. Can anyone identify this machine?

More seriously, I have no idea but would suggest it was one of the numerous one-off sport airplanes built by some fanatic air-minded engeneer.

I thought it looked a bit like a Messerschmitt M23

Hi Larry,

The question was asked on a French forum and it seems it was a Farman F-233 (Gipsy I of 95 hp), ex-F-ALGU, or a F-238 (Gipsy III of 105 hp).
When war broke out in September 1939, all civilian aircraft were impressed into Armée de l'Air service and used for training or liaison purposes.

Hello Chris,

Thanks for your assistance both here and on Aeroforums. A follow up question, if I may. You state that all french civilian aircraft were impressed and I note for example that in Henri Lacaze's Morane-Saulnier ses Avions, ses projets that the author states on P.172 , that an MS 302 and a MS 309 were requisitioned in 1939. Is there a list published anywhere showing which french civilian aircraft were impressed in 1939/40?

Unfortunately, I don't think so.
In the French Air Force, most of them were given "matricules militaires", but we still look for a complete list.
