Nachtjagd 17/18 july 1943
Hi all.....
I am looking for information on Nachtjagd. It did not find an answer in the Nachtjagd Théo Boiten's books. During the night of July 17 to 18, 1943, a Boulton Paul Defiant from the 515 sq was shot down around midnight by a German fighter. The fight was observed by a Mosquito crew from the 256 sq, which itself shot down the German fighter, presumed to be a FW190. I am looking for the unit of this German fighter, or even the name of its pilot. Unfortunately, as I indicated, Theo Boiten's documentation makes no mention of this case which is well documented in the Form 540/541 of the 515 and 256 sq. Thanks in advance and have a good week , |

Re: Nachtjagd 17/18 july 1943
The 256 Sqn claim was south of the Isle of Wight around midnight. The only German unit which might have been operating at night on that date was I./SKG 10 which was not active. Nothing at all in any records I have either for a claim or loss.

This seems very odd to me. No German claims or losses-could this have been a Blue on Blue incident?

Re: Nachtjagd 17/18 july 1943
Hello Chris,
I had also come to the conclusion, parallel to that of a possible involvement of the nachtjagd, to tell myself that it could have been also an accident. a Mosquito shooting down a Defiant at night which he would have taken for a German fighter... it is indeed very curious to record no German losses on this west side of the continent in 1943. it remains possible... |
