Re: Alex (Sandy) Wheeler

Not much detail is given on his wartime career. Is he possibly Alexander Blair Wheeler (RCAF J.35423) who was with 19 Sqn. RAF in August 1944? He claimed a Bf 109 destroyed on 27 Aug. while flying a Mustang III.

Thanks,
Tom

Re: Alex (Sandy) Wheeler

I am going to check census records to see if I can find more information.

Yes, I'm fairly sure that the Alex Wheeler who died in Santa Maria WAS F/O Alexander Blair Wheeler of 19 Sq. Looking online I found his wedding in 1948 see below:

https://www.newspapers.com/clip/2982...eler_inga_van/.

In the Santa Maria obituary, it mentions his childhood in China with missionary parents. and a search on his father , Dr. W Reginald Wheeler reveals that he was a missionary in China. Below is a link to his collected papers at Cornell University. He even wrote a book about his missionary journey - A MAN SENT FROM GOD, by W. Reginald Wheeler. 333 pp. Westwood,. New Jersey, Fleming H. Revel1 Co., 1956. :

Re: Alex (Sandy) Wheeler

There is some conflicting information about the three Bf109s claimed by 19 Squadron on their combat on August 27,1944. The one Bf109 lost on this date was lost by I/JG-4 in a takeoff accident. Possibly the Mustangs of 19 Sq. were in combat with Bf109s of III/JG-27 which reported two Mustangs as victories in the same locality (E of Rouen). No 19 Sq Mustangs were lost in this action. Also, no III/JG-27 casualties, either.
