Exclamation Lt. Robert Nelson Pigg 13 May 1922, d. 13 Dec. 1944.

Hello ,

Lt. Pigg's plane was "My Buddy". Lt. Pigg was killed in action when he bailed out of My buddy when the engines quit. He bailed out of the plane in his parachute, and promptly collided with a B-26 Marauder which killed him instantly..Where r did this happened Lt Pigg is buried at Henri-Chapelle US cemetery in Belgium.

Greetings

Re: Lt. Robert Nelson Pigg 13 May 1922, d. 13 Dec. 1944.

Lt Pigg was a member of the 479th FG and at this time they were flying P-51s. On December 12, 1944 they had flown a B-24 escort mission and were on their way back when Pigg's engine quit at 22,000 feet. Pigg glided for a while and then radioed that he was down to 15,000 feet and was going to bail out. He was advised to bail out once he was under the clouds below him but Pigg jumped from his plane. Descending by parachute, he reportedly was struck by a B-26 while in the clouds. Found later on the ground, he died on the way to a hospital in Liege. This information is from Terry A Fairfield's book, "The 479th Fighter Group in World War II, in Action over Europe with the P-38 and P-51", page 262.
