Collisions with balloons at Crewe 20/3/43

Hi guys

I've read that on 20 March 1943, a Wellington from Litchfield and an Oxford from Cranwell both collided with barrage balloons at Crewe; all crews/passengers killed (12 in total).

Has anyone further details - I assume the weather was bad in that area at the time.

Cheers
Brian

Re: Collisions with balloons at Crewe 20/3/43

Brian,

Wellington Mk III was X3547 from 27 OTU based at Litchfield. 8 crew members killed. Crashed at 15.20 hrs.

Details are in Bomber Command Losses Vol 7 covering OTUs. Do you need crew names?

As for the Oxford this was DF477 of RAFC but I have no details of the crew; presumably a crew of 4. Details from the Oxford File by ABH

The Oxford was one covered by the late Henk Welting.

Some death details of others on the long list in this thread also.

Brian,

l think it should be pointed out, that the (screened) pilot of No.27 OTU Wellington III X3547, AUS402813 F/Sgt Leonard David WATSON RAAF, also lost two brothers in RAAF service, namely:

AUS420328 F/O (Pilot) Maxwell Thomas Lockwood WATSON RAAF, 22/23-9-1943 No.460 Sqn RAAF, Lancaster III JA859 (on his 1st op.).

and...

AUS420314 P/O (Pilot) Malcolm Douglas WATSON RAAF,
18/19-3-1944 No.466 Sqn RAAF, Halifax III LV827.

Col.
