Re: Bottle oxygéne

Hello

Your bottle looks RAF, but not for oxygen. More probably CO2, for the inflation of the K type dinghy attached to the flying gear of the fighter pilots.

Bonjour

Best regards

Re: Bottle oxygéne

As Jean wrote, K type dinghy, we can see the CO2 cylinder:

Re: Bottle oxygéne

Hello,
Thank you for your information. I hadn't thought of a CO2 bottle.
In addition, this bottle was found in the forest.
How is it possible ?
Was the dinghy on the plane or with the pilot when he jumped?

Bonjour,

First, a little background of the find may help... as such as location.

Re: Bottle oxygéne

life raft should be carry for overwater flight, may be the airplane came from an airfield on other side of sea? the K type and could be attached to parachute harness and was used as seat cushion or stowed in airplane.

Hello

The carrying of a raft for fighter aircraft became usual from 1942 onwards, and it was attached to the parachute harness. Main reason, outside the lack of a specific storage area, was that the ditching of a Spitifire or so was absolutely not recommended, due to the lack of float ability of the plane. So the standard procedure was bailing out, with the dinghy. (Same for the Mustang). Since about every RAF fighter mission in Europe until the second half of 1944 implied flying over water (Channel or North Sea), the dinghy was present on every flight.

Bonjour

Best regards
