Flight Lieutenant Alexander Stuart ANDERSON. Royal New Zealand Air Force. No.487 Squadron. Killed In Action on the 19th November 1944 aged 33.

Alexander was born on the 18th October 1911, the son of William James Stuart Anderson and Freda Anderson, of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. In 1938 he moved to New Zealand and it was here that he joined the RNZAF on the 18th December 1939. Following his initial training as an Air Observer he arrived in the UK on the 10th July 1940, the day the Battle of Britain commenced. He served on Operations with No.75 Squadron and eventually re-mustered as a Pilot in October 1942. He served with a variation of units and spent time training in Canada. After returning to the UK he joinedNo.487 Squadron in September 1944.

On the 19th November 1944 F/Lt Anderson was the pilot of a Mosquito which was tasked with patrolling railways and other movements in the Northern Netherlands, East of the Allied battlefront and North-East of the Ruhr. The plane was shot down by a night-fighter over Germany and is said to have crashed in a field near the Garweiler - Otgenrath road. F/Lt Anderson is buried in the Rheinberg War Cemetery, Germany. He was the husband of Mercia Anderson, of Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex, England.

No Mosquito (including FB.VI HR248), or any other aircraft for that matter, ever crashed, "in a field near the Garweiler - Otgenrath road".

No doubt, Errol Martyn's lawyers could give you (and scarletboy44), a more adequate response!

I wonder if Col's reply was smart assed, maybe I just misread it.
But I am sure you are referring to the road between Garzweiler and Otzenrath.

Alas, that area does not exist anymore. Garzweiler, is history as the whole town (like dozens of others) have vanished to the Garzweiler surface mine, the most ugliest hole in Germany. Dozens of crash-sites and dozens of MIAs have vanished, all in the name of money. Even a complete Autobahn has been dismantled and a second one will have the same fate in 2017. To my knowledge Otzenrath was a ghost town, but vanished only two years ago.

First of all Martyn wrote Gargweiler and Otgenrath, also stating he had been unable to find any villages with such a name in Germany.

Of course if he had friends like Col. Bruggy, its no wonder he never got the two places correct in his excellent books.

Of course he cannot state every little source he has used in his researches, but it is pretty obvious that a sloppy Z has been interpreted as a G, either by himself or his source, and after having seen so much handwritten text quoted on these pages, such mistakes doesn't surprise me at all. Few (if any) handwriting seen would win any prices in my world....

If the person/s who have used Errol Marytn's material (without attribution), had followed up on their research, they ( and you), would have found the following amendment:

ANDERSON & TAYLOR - for Gargweiler, read Garzweiler. For Otgenrath, read Otzenrath. Garzweiler is 13km SSE of Moenchengladbach.
