Cromptons-Comptons Spitfires 1943-44

Does anyone have details of the Spitfires flown by Bill Crawford Compton while operating with various squadrons (64, 122, 611) in the period 1943 and with 145 Wing?

regards

Keith

Re: Cromptons-Comptons Spitfires 1943-44

Spitfire IXc coded WVCo serial unknown 145 Wing, but this is in 1944.
Only other info I have is Spitfire IX BS227 from early 1943 with 64Sq (from CieldeGloire), but I haven't been able to find out anything else about this one either.
Spitfire Vb OUoR W3774 1941. I thought I had this one linked to a Spit he'd named Samson, but can't find the link now.
I'd be interested in more info for his 1943 and later a/c too!
Cheers
Peter

Re: Cromptons-Comptons Spitfires 1943-44

Ok Chris....I had a brain malfunction

Thanks for your comments Peter. I assume Bill Crawford-Compton had his own aircraft later when he led his own wing in 1943 and that the victories he scored as a guest of 122, 611 and 64 squadrons were in squadron aircraft. Maybe the ORB of these squadrons would supply the details but I don't have the cash to buy them from the IWM

best regards

Keith

Re: Cromptons-Comptons Spitfires 1943-44

Yep, that'll cost me £12 well spent if it answers my questions for these squadrons. Thanks Chris, appreciate your input. Suggestions for the claims with Hornchurch Wing and 145 Wing? Perhaps 222, 129 Squadrons and the French units of 145?

Some of us are enthusiasts, some are authors. This is a bit of fun, and enjoyable. I dip into the forum to enjoy the stuff that is put there. I don't publish because I am just an amateur, unlike you. I contribute where I can and always thank those who answer (unlike you).

As we get older maybe we get more cantankerous but...

oh, by the way thanks and best regards...

Re: Cromptons-Comptons Spitfires 1943-44

Yes Keith, they are in a Catch-22.
Unfortunately where the information in question also coincides with a book they have released or will soon release, they have a conflict which is not easily resolvable. It costs them time and money to get some of the info, and they hope to recoup it by selling their books. These guys generally know each other and are prepared to exchange information of value. There is information they can share without compromising their other interests, and I think they often do share this info.
But passing potential book info on in a forum such as this defeats their purpose in this regard. They will use the forum to gain information they need, but must to some extent guard it to protect their interests.
For enthusiasts such as us, we'll just have to be happy with what we can get (or afford!)
No offense intended guys, just an observation!
Cheers
Peter

Re: Crawford-Comptons Spitfires 1943-44

No problem Peter. I am not going to get into an argument, I'd just be "cutting off my nose to spite my face". I may invest in the ORBs of 129 and 222 Squadron for September 1943 and see what I can find. I will post the results when I get them - fingers crossed

regards

Keith
