DH Tiger moth & Magister in France 1940
Hello everybody
As i am working on british light planes in french service (article to come Avions) i have two questions. The first one is a bit stupid, but... Did the RAF Miles Magister and Tiger Moth in 1939/june 40 in France were all painted with yellow underside ? The second is a bit more detailed :-) I have two ex RAF planes used by french pilots in june 1940 : Magister R1910 Tiger Moth R5021 May be one of you can know the RAF unit who left them in France in june ? Thanks a lot for your help :-) Best regards Matt |

Re: DH Tiger moth & Magister in France 1940
Hello Matt,
Not much info Im afraid but the relevant Air Britain publication has R1910 as 21 Aircraft Depot and R5021 as Photographic Development Unit.Nothing more than that hopefully someone can add more. Looking forward to the article when published, Regards, Clint |

Hello
Thanks a lot for the infos Clint ! And thanks for your looking forward ;-) I hope it will not take too much time but I still have some work. It's not a simple subject. Re: DH Tiger moth & Magister in France 1940
Matt
With regard to the Magister, Peter Amos (in his book) says: Delivered to 8 MU at Little Rissington 13.11.1939; to 21 AD at Nantes-Bouguenais 28.2.1940; abandoned in France June 1940 With regard to the Tiger Moth, Malcolm Fillmore says: Taken on charge by 6 MU at Brize Norton 11.3.1940; to Photographic Development Unit at Heston 21.4.1940; presumably taken to France; presumably lost in France by June 1940; Presumed struck off charge 21.6.1947 (that date was a massive clean out date by RAF and had no relevance to actual loss date) Cheers Stig |

Re: DH Tiger moth & Magister in France 1940
Hi :-)
@Stig Thanks a lot for this details. For the Moth, its clear that it's not "presumably" now :-). I have two source that he was taken in charge by french Armée de l'air. He is in "free zone" (Vichy zone) at the end of the campaign. I do not know his history after (may be scraped). Hoping for a pic seems to be impossible but i'd like to "imagine" it in color profil. @Paul As always for my work : primary source from many archives, log book, etc. All will be detailed in the article. their units, pilots, flights, etc. The hardest part is pictures... Best regards Matt |

Re: DH Tiger moth & Magister in France 1940
Hi,
Photo of the Miles R1910 formerly taken Toulouse-Francazal in june 1940 amongst Morane 406 is page 138 of the book on GC III/3 (LELApresse) ; the underside does not look very white like the white in the UK roundel or flag... I also look forward to your article in Avions. Not being French speaking is an obstacle, but tenacity usually gets me through the interesting stuff and my dictionary is a quite good and handy friend... Good luck Cheers Stig |
