JG1 Mission Summary Report 14 July 1944

Looking for JG1 Mission Summary Report for the evening mission out of the La Fere airfield on 14 July 1944. In particular, information about the battle that took place near Caen where a Mustang (my father) was downed at 1917h.

Also interested in logbook notes from Herbert Ihelefeld, Alfred Grislawski and Jakob Vogel from the same date.

Looking for info on Uffz. Jakob Vogel:

1. Where was he kept as a POW?
2. What happened to him after the war?
3. Is he still alive?
4. If not, when did he die?

Thanks,

Neil

Neil:

Have you looked at J-P Frappe's La Luftwaffe face au debarquement allie?
It has daily summaries for all three gruppen.

Re: JG1 Mission Summary Report 14 July 1944

Thanks, John. I had not heard of that book, but I'll try to locate a copy.

I believe you helped me in 2006 (through Tom Ivie) with identifying Herbert Ihlelfeld as one of the pilots that shot my father down.

Do you know if mission summary reports were made by the Luftwaffe groups or squadrons? If so, are they in the German archives, or available someplace.

Re: JG1 Mission Summary Report 14 July 1944

Hello Neil,

There is no much information in the J.B. FRAPPE's book about the event which interests you :

In the Luftwaffe victories list of the book, it is noted, dated 14 July 1944, in Caen's area :
/ 19h17 - Oberst. Ihlefeld - St/JG 1 - P-51 - UU 1 (Caen)
/ 19h17 - Hptm. Grilawski - III./JG 1 - P-51 AU (Falaise)
/ ? - Uffz. Vogel - III./JG 1 - P-51 ?
/ 19h30 - Fw. Kutzera - III./JG 1 - Spitfire - UU (Caen)
/ ? - Ofw. Barann - III./JG 1 - Spitfire - ?
/ 19h32 - Gefr. Berger - I./JG 5 - Spitfire - TT 8-9 (Bayeux)
/ 19h34 - Uffz. Schröder - I./JG 5 - Spitfire - TU 8 (North Caen)

Concerning the battle, J.P. Frappé doesn't give many additional precisions : he just tells a battle took place at the beginning of the evening, with the same information that above (winners, units, hours, downed aircraft, places). He tells, too, a 7./JG 1 pilot (Uffz. Orend) was shot down by Spitfires during the battle ; this pilot bailed out, at 19h45, and was captured, unharmed, at 6 km S.E. of Arromanches.

Re: JG1 Mission Summary Report 14 July 1944

Thanks, Babin. At least now I know not to waste my time looking for a copy of the book. I already had that information. What I'm really looking for are the squadron or group historical reports.

My father's E&E Report to the British Army upon his liberation states, "Five or six Me 109s were on my tail. Three were actually firing at me."

Ihlefeld, Grislawski and Vogel each received credit for a Mustang at the exact same time, 19h17, in the Caen area (Vogel has no location listed, but I believe he was flying with JG1 that day) on 14 July 1944. Just one USAAF Mustang was lost during the entire day of 14 July 1944 - my father at that approximate time.

Were there any historical reports made by the group or squadrons?

Does anyone, private collectors possibly have access to the Ihlefeld, Grislawski or Vogel logbooks?

Neil
