Hallo gentlmen!

What is correct abbreviation for Schlachtgeschwader (1st formation - 1942):

Thank You.

Re: Schl.G or SchG - what is correct for Schlachtgeschwader?

According to the British Air Ministry's Manual of German Air Force Terminology, Part VI Abbreviations, page 74, dated 1945-46, the correct abbreviation for Schlacht is Schl. and for Schlachtgeschwader it is Schl.G. or Schl.Geschw. This was up to 20-22 October 1943. After that date, S.G. was the abbreviation for Schlachtgeschwader, but the Germans often used just SG.

Re: Schl.G or SchG - what is correct for Schlachtgeschwader?

Lots of them.

The abbreviation "Sch." from the same source, page 73:

Sch. - Schütze, Schützen, Schiess, Schuss,
Schallmess, Schein, Schule, Schalter, Schalt,
Schutzpolizei, Scheune, Schaden, Schar,
Schupo, Shrapnel, Schaumberg-Lippe.

By the way, the British did not dream these up during the war. These abbreviations come directly from captured Luftwaffe documents, signal intercepts and the captured manual of authorized Luftwaffe abbreviations published by the Luftwaffe.

You know that and I know that, but the Brits didn't.

So, we have the very last word in identifications, but it is wrong. Brilliant. I guess they forgot to capture German typewriters, too...

Regards,
Richard

PS. The U.S. Postal Service now requires entering in the recipient's address when sending packages overseas. You can imagine what a complete headache Groß-Zimmern presents to them...
