Re: Spitfire Crash Sadaung 1945

Have any further details turned up about this incident? I am in the process of compiling Spitfire Accidents in SEAC and the details would be helpful.

Jagan,

F/L Rowan's unit at the time of his OBE(M), was No.14 Ferry Unit.

Re: Spitfire Crash Sadaung 1945

I believe this is a very likely candidate

MD245 - 607 Sqn - Hit Ambulance landing having a in at, 11/03/45
I have this in my forthcoming Spitfire losses update.

Quote:
1945-03-11 Spitfire VIII Sgt H Hansley MD245 Sadaung On landing from one of these patrols in the afternoon, F Lt R L Briggs had the misfortune of having an inner tyre burst. This caused him to swing towards some parked ac of 155 squadron and a petrol bowser. To avoid them he swung his aircraft around but the strain was too great and caused the port leg to collapse. Sgt H Hansley following in crashed into some ambulances crossing the strips to help J L Briggs. Hansley had a miraculous escape, his ac turning over onto its back and he received minor cuts. The Indian driver was unfortunately killed. The medical order LAC Moore had to have 14 stitches and received concussion.

Re: Spitfire Crash Sadaung 1945

Scratch that..

This one is it - confirmed

1945-04-02

On returning from the Miektila Patrols, Sgt G R Valc was coming into land from the north and hit a truck which was crossing the North end of the strip. His aircraft was wrecked finishing on its back on fire and Sgt Vale had a mraculous escape, being pulled from the aircraft by the joint efforts of Flt Lt Rowan of Ferry Command and LAC C F Sullivan of 132 R&SU . Sgt Vale received secondary burns of arms and a lacerated forehead. The driver of the lorry, an IOR was killed.

Jagan,

Re: Post #13. I believe your F Lt R L Briggs, is possibly, 60330 F/Lt James Logan BRIGGS DFC, RAFVR - see: Those Other Eagles/Shores/70 and Air War Over Burma/Shores/227 & 230.
