Do-17 in Turkey

Gentlemen,

I am looking for information about a Do-17 which landed in southwestern Turkey (close to Mediterranean coast) due to a navigation error on May 24, 1941. It is probable that the a/c was from a unit in Mediterranean.

Any info about the WNr, unit and the crews are welcome.

Regards

Bata

Re: Do-17 in Turkey

I have found out that the Do-17Z was from 1. Staffel Kampfgeschwader 2, which was based at Athens-Tatoi.

Can anyone guide me a source or person to find the WNr and pilot names of this a/c?

Thanks.

Would this be Wk Nr 3494 at Krynni? No names as there were no casualties

Hi Chris

Was the crew interned, or don't you have such information?

Cheers

Re: Do-17 in Turkey

Dear Chris and Brian,

The crew was in good condition and all were interned by the Turkish authorities, later sent to Ankara. The Do-17 was given to Turkish AF for evaluation and testing.

I dont know where Krynni is. However, ther is a town named Krini in Corfu. There is another place named Kyrini (Cyrene), which is an ancient town at today's Bengazi, Libya.

As the Do-17 was lost due to navigation error, neither them nor the Luftwaffe might be aware of where the a/c was lost. All we know is that they found themselves in Turkey in a sunny day.
