Re: NA114, Halifax, 10. Sqn

Hello Kaczmarek,

yes I’m sure, at least when the database „Lostaircraft.com“ existed (2010-2015).

I remember the case of the Halifax LK903 which was lost on November 26, 1943 in the area Stromberg / Koblenz. The inquiry/FOI request of the administrator of „Lostaircraft.com“ in September 2011 led to the crashplace Schnorbach and the German Abschuss-Nr./casualty No. KE 7130.

Regards
Leo

Re: NA114, Halifax, 10. Sqn

Firstly, the Halifax crashed along the homeward route, after bombing Hannover. As stated elsewhere in this thread, the aircraft exploded in mid-air and crashed east of Lemgo (where the crew were subsequently buried).

The cause of loss is disputed. At least one document on the Luftwaffe KE file gives the cause as "night fighter" (as confirmed by the Aircraft Loss card). The Bomber Command Operational Research Section concluded after the war the cause of loss as "Flak estimated but probably FIGHTER." (TNA AIR 14/3460)

There is no recorded Flak claim at or near Lemgo by the Luftwaffe 8. Flak-Brigade on this night. Their closest claim was against 425 Sqn Halifax NR178, some 15 kilometres further south-east. (BArch RL 19/469)

The time of loss for NA114 was likely circa 19:30 to 20:30, based on other events in the same area.

NA114 was NOT shot down by Lt. Otto Fries. The confusion over this stems from a bogus time of claim ("19:30") inserted into the Nachtjagd claims list compiled by the late Emil Nonnenmacher, an ex-Nachtjagd pilot and post-war researcher.

Lt. Fries, according to his Flugbuch, made his aerial victory claim over the northern Netherlands, and he did not write down the time of his claim.

At this point in time, there are no readily available details of a Nachtjagd air combat claim matching the loss of NA114, and the records of 8. Flak Brigade confirm they did not claim to shoot down an enemy aircraft near Lemgo.

Cheers

Rod
