Re: Fritz RG Muller need help

Theo Boiten and Martin Bowman's, Battles with the Luftwaffe (2001) has several pages of reminiscences by Fritz R.G. Mueller about flying the Me 262 in combat. See pp. 182-83,204, and 224 in the edition of the book published by Janes. Although the book contains no pictures of any 262 identified as having clearly been flown my Mueller, it does say that he flew Me 262A-1a 500491 into captivity on May 8, 1945. The Boiten and Martin book says that this aircraft is on display at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC, although I note the Museum's website says the plane on display, "Yellow 7" of III./JG 7, was flown by Hans Arnold. An explanation of this apparent contradiction can be found in Hugh Morgan and John Weal's German Jet Aces of World War 2 (Osprey, 1998), p. 94. They report that following Arnold's death in combat in another aircraft on April 17, 1945, Arnold's "Yellow 7" was taken over by Fritz R.G. Mueller, and it was Mueller who flew it into captivity from Prague-Ruzyn to Lechfeld on May 8. So, you can examine pictures of "Yellow 7" on the NASM website and presumably see a 262 that Mueller flew for a few weeks. I note that the Me 262 on display at NASM shows a yellow III Gruppe bar, while the picture of the same aircraft in Morgan and Weal shows the aircraft with a white III Gruppe bar. I would have to do some more research to see which one would be correct. Both Mueller and Arnold were assigned to 11./JG 7.
