Flt Lt F. 'Dickie' DYKES RAF Java 1942

Hi guys

My latest query - Flt Lt Dykes (apparently an RAF navigator) escaped from Java with others aboard a small sailing vessel named 'Venture' and reached India (?) circa April 1942 (see 'Singapore's Dunkirk')

Can anyone fully identify him and confirm his status; if so, with which unit did he serve?

Cheers
Brian

Brian,

80918 F/L James Oswald DYKES RAFO - 243 AMES - Held Burma (Rangoon) - (Technical Branch). Later RAFVR - MBE(M) - LG: 1-10-1946 - p.4093. https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/...upplement/4903

See: Unsung Heroes of the Royal Air Force The Far East Prisoners of War/Stubbs & Stubbs/p.118.

See also: When Singapore Fell: Evacuations and Escapes, 1941-42/Joseph Kennedy/Palgrave,1989.p.113-

You won't find mention of Kennedy's book in Singapore's Dunkirk - both were originally published in 1989 and S's D. was reprinted (unchanged) by Pen & Sword in 2014.

Col.

On page 47 of "Captivity, Flight and Survival in World War II" by Alan J Levine is an account about a "James Dykes".
