A technical question : was the Do217M11 equipped with Henschel 293 or Fritz X ?

Hi everybody

The Do217M11 was a specific and rare aircraft: less than 40 built, extended wingspan, rather a good aircraft.

I read in the documentation that it was equipped with a Fritz PC1400X, hanging under the fuselage, but I was told as well that all aircraft of KG100 were re equipped beginning of 1944 with Henschel 293.

Where is the truth ?

In our case, we are working on Do217M11 Wnr 723052 of KG 100 which dropped its flying bombs on the allied boats in Normandy on 10 June 1944 and crashed on its way back to Toulouse Francazal, in the north of Cahors. We wonder what she was carrying.

Thanks for your tips.

GC

Gilles-I am away in France at the moment so do not have access but sure.you have my Do 217 book and the book in French on KG 100? The Do 217 could carry both but not under the fuselage but under the wings. Availability of the bomb varied as did the target which dictated what was carried. Fritz x was better for attacks on armoured warships dropping at a steeper angle and higher speed

Chris, you are right concerning the use of the bomb, it was depending on the target.

Concerning M11, it does had the possibility to have the Fritz X under the fuselage, I just sent you a PM with a drawing on this topic.

And, no, I don't have - yet - your book about the Do217. May I order one now ? with your signature please, we will exchange PM on this topic

Best regards and enjoy la France

Gilles

I have yet to see any photos showing 2xFX under the wings. I feel that the launching technique required a single pass, and an asymmetric FX would be rather a lot to handle. The take-off weight would also be limiting, and surely restrictive on range. It seems like these drawings or airshow pics showing a wide range of weaponry, when the aircraft concerned would only ever be able to carry a small proportion.
