Re: Heinkel He 115 WNr 2398 emerges from the sea near Stavanger

Seaplanes,

Can not find any evidence they used the 20 mm MK404. Why would they when they had the MG151?

The lower fairing does not seem to support the fitment of a cannon as it does look more in keeping with the B model.

regards

Mark

Re: Heinkel He 115 WNr 2398 emerges from the sea near Stavanger

Dear Mark,
The best reference is the KTB's of Gen.d.Lw.b.Ob.d.M./O.Qu. I enclose a photo of a He 115B/C conversion of 1./906 (8L+IH). You can clearly see the box like mount of the MK 404 nose gun as well as both flexible MG 15's in the A and B-Stand. The tip of the wing mounted MG 17 can be seen in its rearward firing position behind the engine.

Hi seaplanes, good to see it bilds up on history of the aircraft. I added some pic of the coding, newest are 8L + FH, under BH + AM (A visable) on yellow band. Also a pic of the skin from inside the cocpit erea to show the wear after 70 years of salt water

Re: Heinkel He 115 WNr 2398 emerges from the sea near Stavanger

Hallo Norvegian friends!
Just for information - how´s the content of salt within the fjords in comparison to the open sea?
Can we expect similar plane wrecks from different Norvegian fjords?

Regards

Roland

Re: Heinkel He 115 WNr 2398 emerges from the sea near Stavanger

Seaplanes,

Thanks for that. Nice pictures of 8L+IH. (Note yellow wing tips and below fuselage cross). The MK404 cannon housing is so large, it is not on 2398. Nose is more like a B (on 8L+FH).

Ernst,
Could see the A of the Stkz below the letter F. Interesting to see the remains of a yellow fuselage band as well. Knew the wingtips were yellow. Assume this is historic. Does not look like they had been painted over.

Still hoping to see the main construction plate with date of manufacture.

regards

Mark

Re: Heinkel He 115 WNr 2398 emerges from the sea near Stavanger

Has posted a pic of the main data plate, and a pic of the wing tip. As you see, it is a greenish paint may be to cover the yellow under it. And if you look closely on the mid pic, you will see tath the 2nd paint layer is bright and clear and dont seems to fit any 72 73 code. More blue/green . The outer paint layer seems to fit 72 73 or even pale 74

I think somone is working on a profile

Ernst

Re: Heinkel He 115 WNr 2398 emerges from the sea near Stavanger

Ernst,

That seems logical. The fuselage band has also been over painted. Looks as though when it came back from Billijiord in Finnmark in autumn 42 (operating on the Eastern Front the yellow markings were required). Back on the West Coast the yellow markings were then painted over.

The main plate is interesting. All the normal information. Manufacturer at Rostock, Type He115, W.Nr 2398. Abnahmedatum ? 39. Trying to work out but it looks like 9.39? The tail strut fairing had a part plate dated 9.39 as well by the looks of it. No stamp showing B upgraded to C.
