identity Wellington claim Maj. Lütje Stab IV./NJG6 S. Bratislava 20-21.9.1944?

Dear all,

Who can help me with establishing the identity of a Wellington victim that was claimed shot down by Maj. Lütje, Kommandeur of IV./NJG6 on 20-21 September 1944?:

Maj. Herbert Lütje: 40 Stab IV./NJG6 Wellington NE Neusiedler See/S. Bratislava (Grid Square EP): 2.000 m. 23.30

Grateful for any details! Cheers, Theo

Probably LN816 'Z' of 40 Sq., which crashed in Croatia, piloted by F/Sgt. C. C. Westwood (RAAF). All returned OK by the partisans. Target was Hegyeshalom marshalling yard, Hungary.

Thanks a lot for these details; the 40 Sqn Wellington indeed seems the most likely victim of Lütje; the other three Wellingtons that were lost on this night have all been positively matched to claims by Oblt. Kraft (2) and Fw. Brunner.

Hi Col.,

Cheers and thanks for the newspaper cutting -the crew stated that they were brought down by 'Flak', but I've not been able to find a matching Flak claim, only four Nachtjäger claims for four Wellingtons destroyed, all of which were confirmed as full victories by the I. Jagdkorps on 12.1.1945.

Cheers, Theo
