long missions counted as double
Sometimes long missions were counted as two "Feindflug" - what was the regulations around that, how long duration was required to count as two missions?
And what impact did that have on promotion, awards, compensation? |

Re: long missions counted as double
Hi Mikael,
One “Feindflug” can be counted as two or more Frontflügen. A Feindflug was counted double when the Feindflug was over 4hours. But from take off to landing it is counted as one Feindflug. Awards: the Frontflugspange counted the number of Frontflügen, so more of them would mean that you got your awards sooner. Especially the EKII / I and Ehrenpokal were also part of this counting system in the early days. On the East Front the number of Frontflügen flown would go up to receive the higher awards like Ehrenpokal, DKiG and Ritterkreuz. Regards, Thomas

Re: long missions counted as double
Hi Mikael
I have the Flugbuch to a man who flew long missions over Norway to resupply Narvik in the Ju 52 during 1940. He was credited x3 for missions over 8 hours as well as x2 for missions over 4 hours. These were calculated in 1941 when the first clasp he was awarded (after the introduction of clasps in 1941) was a bomber clasp in gold - by that time he was flying with KG 54, hence a bomber clasp.
