Eric "Winkle" Brown RN pilot

Hi guys

I've just watched the Youtube video (produced by Mark Felton) about the use of Gladiators in the Battle of Britain.

Mention is made of Lt Brown's flight from Yeovilton when he and a companion intercepted two He111s, but one was shot down by AA, which also caused the second to fall.

Do we have additional information, including the date? Is the incident mentioned in any of the illustrious pilot's books? Or other books?

Cheers
Brian

Re: Eric "Winkle" Brown RN pilot

Hi Brian. It's mentioned - briefly- in his book "Duels in the sky", but no date; he says "I chased two HeIII Hs in a Gladiator over England in the autumn of 1940 at about 5,000 ft., ......I could make little gain on them; fortunately, they fell to ground defenses before they could reach their target at Bristol..."
Regards
Nick

Sounds like the September raids? Probably a bit of hearsay in his account

Re: Eric "Winkle" Brown RN pilot

Thanks Nick & Chris

Perhaps a date will come to light! I wonder where his relevant logbook is?

Cheers
Brian
