Heinkel 111 shot down Yselstein 14.5.40
Hi Guys,
Could anybody provide details on a Heinkel 111 shot down at Yselstein on 14.5.40. Looking for details of unit, crew, markings etc. possibly from KG4. Also can anybody confirm the identity of Hptm Hermann Prochnow's KG4 Heinkel111 possibly shot down by Flt.Lt "Sailor" Malan, 18/19.6.40 Any help much appreciated. Rgs. Steve |

Re: Heinkel 111 shot down Yselstein 14.5.40
The place is IJsselstein, south of Utrecht.
Yselstein does not exist in the Netherlands. A place called Ysselsteyn is the place of the German cemetery. Call sign of the He 111 is 5J+CH. So it was 1./KG 4. Crew unknown. Was the plane not shot down at May 13th, 1940? Jaap Last edited by Jaap Woortman; 17th June 2006 at 11:57. |

Re: Heinkel 111 shot down Yselstein 14.5.40
Hi Steve,
F/Lt Malan's victim was shot down at 01.15 hrs and crashed into the North Sea near the Cork Light Vessel. The crew consisted of: FF: Hptm Hermann Prochnow, Erkm 55536/1, KIA BO: Uffz Franz Heyeres, Erkm 55536/8, MIA BF: Uffz Hermann Wojis, Erkm 55536/22, KIA BS: Fw Richard Bunk, Erkm 55536/33, MIA The bodies of Hptm Prochnow and Uffz Wojis washed ashore on each side of the North Sea. The body of Hptm Prochnow was found on the Isle of Shepey and was buried there. After the war re-interred at Cannock Chase, plot I, row 9, grave 353. The body of Uffz Wojis washed ashore on the causeway Afsluitdijk, The Netherlands, between kilometre marker 18.8 and 18.9 on 13th August 1940. He was initially buried at Huisduinen cemetery near Den Helder and rests now at Ysselsteyn cemetery, plot CT, row I, grave 4. Unfortunately I've no code or Werknummer of this He.111, might be difficult for early 1940 losses... Perhaps somebody else can add more details? Regards, Hans Nauta |

Re: Heinkel 111 shot down Yselstein 14.5.40
The Heinkel of 1./KG4 at IJsselsteijn was indeed shot down on May 13, not 14. It was participating in a raid on Dordrecht and hit by dutch anti-aircraft fire. It made a belly landing and after a short skirmish the crew was made prisoner by dutch police troops. I don't know their names or fate, but assume that they given the limited time for transporting them to England before the dutch surrender on May 15 they have been liberated by the german occupation troops.

Re: Heinkel 111 shot down Yselstein 14.5.40
I think we are dealing with two different losses here. One on the 13. May and the other on 19. June (Hptm. Prochnow)
The loss on the 13. does not list any casualties in the BA loss reports. Were as the other loss for Hptm. Prochnow is recorded on 19. June. With the crew losses as posted by Hans. I also think he was Staffelkapitän of 4. Staffel not 1. Staffel, but I could be wrong. Norbert |
