Bomber gunner aces
"Bonjour" to all,
I am new on this forum, I am from France, interested in aviation aces. I research gunner aces, I have edited this pages: http://jpgleize.perso.neuf.fr/aces/ww2usgun.htm http://jpgleize.perso.neuf.fr/aces/ww2rafgu.htm http://jpgleize.perso.neuf.fr/aces/ww2fgun.htm I know that despite what is said about it, gunner's victories are clearly ratified, at least in the USSAF, RAF (not obviously in the Armée de l'Air), so there would have lists of confirmed victories. Gunners said often that it was not their problem at the time, but I think that it is to honor their courage to edit those lists. Can I have the help of you, all great names to progress in this task. Merci from France (1000 excuses for my poor English) Jean-Paul |

Re: Bomber gunner aces
Bonjour Jean-Paul
Great to see your work with air gunner aces but regarding Henry Jacobs, RAF I believe most of the claims were not made as an air gunner. You can read more about him on: http://www.jewishvirtuallibrary.org/jsource/ww2/sugar4.html He must have been a radar operator during most of these claims. He flew with the night fighter Ace John Braham as radar operator during 1943 (claims 5 destroyed and 1 damaged). Good luck with your work, Peter |

Re: Bomber gunner aces
Hi Jean-Paul
You have missed Flt Lt John Hughes DFC. As a Defiant gunner during the Battle of Britain he shot down three He111s while flying with P/O Mike Herrick - all confirmed. He later served with 69 Squadron on Marylands at Malta and was credited one plus a shared victory, and later still with a fighter probable while flying with Bomber Command towards the end of the war. Cheers Brian |

Re: Bomber gunner aces
Bonjour Brian,
I have missed this name, I will rush to my "Those Other Eagles" . Thanks a lot. I studied diaries of a little number of US bomber groups and checked victories to list of names (so names like TSgt Remmel or SSgt Jarvis Hall...), those BG with web sites. - but all the other US BG ?? - what about British Bomber Squadrons ?? Re: Bomber gunner aces
Hi Jean-Paul
Regarding John Hughes, I should have written Blenheim air-gunner (not Defiant). His pilot Mike Herrick won't be in Those Other Eagles; he is in Aces High. Cheers Brian |

Re: Bomber gunner aces
Quote:
Are you sure about the claims made by Hughes while flying with Herrick? According to the ORB (oldrafrecords.com) Herrick was flying with Sgt Pugh when he made the first two claims and P/O Brown when he made the third claim. Cheers, Peter |

Re: Bomber gunner aces
Hi
Egg on face again! I meant John Pugh. I thought he was on both sorties, again my error! Apologies Brian |

Re: Bomber gunner aces
Hi Brian,
I was a bit puzzled about Hughes but now I understand. A mistake easy to make. Can we read about John Pugh in Marylands over Malta? "Egg on face" was a new expression for me. It is really educating to visit this forum. Peter |
