Fw Günther Keil 2./JG 2

Fw Günther Keil 2./JG 2 (10 claims total) is listed as MIA 20Jun42 flying FW 190A-2 (0238; Black 4+).

Tony Wood's claims lists show a Obfw Günther Keil 3./JG 2 claimed 2 Spitfires on 19Aug42. Is this the same individual or an error. Did he return to duty after being listed as MIA on 20Jun42?

Best Regards

Re: Fw Günther Keil 2./JG 2

Bonjour Andy,
Fw Gunther Keil remains still a mystery for me. Apparently, there is Günther Keil with the 2./JG2 of 1940 to June 20, 1942, date on which it is reported missing to broad from Fécamp. It would have obtained 8 victories (+ 2 not confirmed). There is too a Ofw G.Keil (maybe Georg Keil), of the 3./JG2, obtains 2 victories the 19th august 1942, which would carry according to the lists of victories to the West its total to 9 and 10. So there 10 victoiries for each two G.Keil.
Moreover, In the book "Hans Assi Hahn, the man and the machine", there is a photo of a G.Keil in Fw190 named "Luki-Luki" seems to be taken in Caen... well two different pilots? Moreover, this Keil of the 2 /JG2 could be call "Sepp" by his comrades?

Re: Fw Günther Keil 2./JG 2

Hi Fred,

Thanks for your reply. The data you provide is what made me ask the question in the first place. There seems to be some confusion as to the individual and the actual number of claims.

There was a Georg Keil who flew with JG 11 but he was a Fw in 1943

So perhaps it's actually Georg Keil who made claims on 19Aug42 but maybe not his 9th and 10th claims.

Has anyone got the relevant JFV series entries for the loss on 20Jun42 and the claims on 19Aug42.

Best Regards

Andy Fletcher

"Fw. Gunther Keil, 2./JG-2, Fw-190A-2, Werke Nr. 0238,Black 4,Failed to return from sortie,Location and cause unknown, pilot MIA"

Hi,

Die Jadgfliegerverbaende, Teil 7 states:

Fw. Gunther Keil of 2./JG 2 was s/d on 20/6/1942. He claimes his last eighth victory on that day.
Obfw. Georg Keil of 3./JG 2 has two uncorfimed claims on 19/8/1942.

Regards,
Michal

Re: Fw Günther Keil 2./JG 2

Excellent Michal, thank you very much looking that up.

So is Obfw Georg Keil of 3./JG 2 the same individual who later flew with 8. and 9./JG 11?

Cheers

Re: Fw Günther Keil 2./JG 2

Yes Andy and Further information!

I put the question to Erik Mombeek, which work on volume 2 of his book “Dans le Ciel de France, Histoire de la JG2 Richthofen”
Moreover, like Christmas approaches, I benefit from this mail to transmit the links where you can find the volume 1:

http://www.luftwaffe.be
http://www.avions-bateaux.com/fr/eric-mombeek-publications+dans-le-ciel-de-francehistoire-de-la-jg-2+a1v_1036.html
http://www.christian-schmidt-fachbuchhandlung.de/product_info.php?products_id=4830

It is formidably illustrated photographs, much news photos….superb.
For Erik Mombeek, It there Fw Gunther Keil which was in 2./JG2 since 1940. He leaves the JG2 for the JG3 and he still returns with the 2./JG2 where it dies on June 20, 1942.
Then, There is Georg Keil, from the 3./JG2, which obtains well two successes during the Jubilee operation . He leaves the JG2 to the JG11, where he received the DkiG the 25th December 1944. Georg Keil survives the war and Erik Mombeek met him 20 years ago.

Fred
IMO hardly called "Sepp" if his name was "Georg" or "Günther".
A nickname still used in Bavaria and Austria for "Josef ".

Georg would be " Schorsch" IMO.
