Confirming Claims on Encounter Reports

Newbie here on the forum.....

Need some help here guys. I have a 55th FG pilot, Robert Cox, who posted claims of 2 Do 217's destroyed in the air, and 5 Do 217's destroyed on the ground for 3rd March 1945. The action took place at Kitzingen A/F and Cox was alone, but pressumably had his gun camera on. His claims were posted by the 55th Group and he filed an encounter report. Can anybody tell me if these claims were confirmed by the 8th AAF?...or tell me where I could find out?

I've been advised that Frank Olynyk is THE MAN when it comes to Combat Claims, and that he is a member of this Forum

Re: Confirming Claims on Encounter Reports

Robert Cox did not receive credits for anything on 3 March, 1945 - not in USAAF 8th AFVCB, or USAF 85. Frank may be able to shed light on more

Bill Marshall

Re: Confirming Claims on Encounter Reports

Thanks for your reply Bill. Where on earth do I go about getting access to those files you mentioned? Is there an archive facility that I need to get to?

Thanks again,

Shabby

Re: Confirming Claims on Encounter Reports

The originals of all 8th Fighter Command encounter reports, and Victory Credit Board reports, are in the National Archives, in College Park. Be warned, it is a LOT of paper.

With regard to 1st Lt Robert M Cox, 38th FS, 55th FG, he submitted a combat report. Credit was denied by 8VCB(45)/10-11; that is, line 11 of the 10th VCB report of 1945 (the organization and numbering of the VCB reports changed over the years). As I remember, the reason is not given, although there might be annotations on the encounter report.

Frank.

Re: Confirming Claims on Encounter Reports

Frank,

I am in debt to you sir! Thank you very much for the information on Cox's claim and also how to research the material.

All I need now is a cheap flight across the Atlantic and a promise of chocolates and flowers as a bribe to my wife to let me go...

Thanks again Frank, much appreciated.
