III./ZG 2 Question.

I am currently researching a Bordfunker who was assigned to 7./ZG 2 on 17-January-1942 (to 28-April-1942).

I am confused as III./ZG 2 was formed in April-1942 to be a single seat Jabo Gruppe operating with Messerschmitt Bf 109E-7U1 machines.

Why would an experienced Bordfunker be assigned 3 months early to a Gruppe operating single seat aircraft?

Am I missing something here? Was the Gruppe orignally planned as yet another Messerschmitt Bf 110 equipped Gruppe, and had began building a cadre of experienced crews as early as Jan-1942?

Any help and pointers will be very well received.

Regards Richard.

Richard

No real answer, but are you sure he was not assigned to 7./ZS 2?

Cheers

No, it was (unfortunately) defiantly 7./ZG 2 as reflected in his P-File.

Re: III./ZG 2 Question.

Hi Richard,

Something wrong somewhere ....can't be posted to a the unit if it didn't exist, so the clerk got it wrong in his docs or were updated retrospectively.

What was his previous unit? Also could he have been on light duties at the time?

Feel free to send me scans if you want...

/Ian

Re: III./ZG 2 Question.

In early 1942 the Gruppe was still to be equipped with Me 210. Maybe be that this is explanation. Only after Me 210 fiasco the plans changed to Bf 110/Bf 109 as there were not enough Bf 110s available.

regards,
Pawel

Pawell, that might well be the answer!

His previous assignment was Erprobungsstaffel 210 ‘Rechlin’, and maybe the Gruppe was intended to be equipped with the Me 210, if that is the case it could well be the answer.

Many thanks indeed.

Regards Richard.

Both Z.G. 1 and Z.G. 2 were to be equipped with 210.
