Thx for those pics - haven´t yet seen any photos of the destroyed flying behemoth. A sad sight, though...

How was the Bv238 destroyed? Sources say Lt U Drew and 2 other P-51 pilots but others say these 3 destroyed a French flying boat.

Typhoons of No. 438 Squadron RCAF are the ones who shot her up.

Re: Wreck of Bv 238 at the Schaalsee

My mistake. It was No. 439 Squadron.

"I was leading 4 a/c on an armed recce in the Retzburg-Schwerin area. I spotted a B.V.222 at the edge of the lake. I called Red Section to following me down. I opened fire from 1200 ft., closing to 150 ft., giving the a/c 2 bursts of 3 sec. each. Many strikes were observed along the wing and fire broke out behind the wing root. The a/c was left burning."

Claim: I claim 1 BV.222 DESTROYED, shared by F/O's J.S. Brock, W. Kubicki, F.M. Hallford. Signed F/L LeGear. 439 Squadron

A recent article (within the last five-years) on this incident was published in the CAHS Journal by a witness to the event.
