Ju 88 loss off Lowestoft on 14 May 1942

At 18:45 on 14 May 1942, S/L Haywood (http://surfcity.kund.dalnet.se/commonwealth_haywood.htm) and Sgt Mares (Czech) was involved in combat with a reportedly black-painted and unmarked Ju 88 10 miles off Lowestoft. They claimed it as a shared probably destroyed.
A quick check seems to indicate that this was Fighter Commands only claim this day.

Is there anyone with info on which Luftwaffe unit this might have been and if they suffered any damaged/losses?

Best wishes/Håkan

Re: Ju 88 loss off Lowestoft on 14 May 1942

Some years ago another researcher tried to trace this JU88 but could not find any loss/damaged aircraft in the Luft. QM's list, I had a look but also could not find anything. S/L Haywoods combat report said they left the Ju88 streaming white vapour from its port engine flying off sea level, he claimed half a JU88 probaly destroyed. Part of his claim was that yellow section of 610Sqd. which took off at 1920hrs reported an oil slick on the sea in the combat area. However it looks like this aircraft got home.

Hello Brian,

Thanks for your reply, which I appreciate.
I have the combat report and came to the same conclusion as you, thus asking for any damaged Ju 88 as well.

Best wishes/Håkan
