Mosquito shot down on 17.3.'45.

Greetings all!

Need help in research who shot down one Mosquito on Night Intruder mission on night 17/18 March 1945. over North West Germany. Target was transport and lines of communication.

Are there any known Luftwaffe aerial victories that night?

Thank you for help.
With kind regards,

Marko

Hello ,

On 18/03/45 Oblt Welter Kurt from II./NJG 11 claimed two Mosquito’s that night his 45 and 46 victory.

Greetings

If you take a look at the “Books & Magazines” section. Andreas Zapf has just announced a shortened version, in English, of his book on NJG 11’s jet night fighters. That might answer your question.

Yes, it does. Zapf covers the night of 17/18 March '45 in three paragraphs on page 48 of his new book. It states that three 262s took off. One was lost heading towards the target area. There is no evidence of any claims made by the other two pilots. Despite this, some sources suggest that Welter claimed two Mosquitoes that night.

Zapf does a thorough review (9 pages) of Welter's complete claims list. His research appears to be exhaustive and objective. The picture of Welter that emerges from this is not pretty, but it seems he was no less reliable in his claiming than many other Wilde Sau and night-fighter pilots.
