Can anyone identify Sgt JULY, 59 Sqn 1942?

Hi guys

An unusual surname (possibly a typo from the past).

Cheers
Brian

Brian,

Nobody with that surname in AIR78/89/17. Plenty (15+) of Julyan.

Re: Can anyone identify Sgt JULY, 59 Sqn 1942?

Hi Dave

Thanks for your response, which has led me to investigate further.

Assuming JULY was a typo somewhere along the line, I thought that the name JUBY might be a contender - and I have now found a Sgt Dennis Albert JUBY, who was captured in Java and later lost his life when the hell ship Maru Suez was sunk.

Dennis was an air gunner but I'm unaware at the present time if he was 59 Squadron. I'll keep checking.

Cheers
Brian

Brian. I gotta ask as a self professed SEAC buff. I may have missed the news elsewhere, but many of your questions seem to be about the far east - what is this project covering? and when can we look forward to getting our hands on it?

Brian,

Re: 1152011 Dennis Albert JUBY.

The Melbourne University (Australia), holds a series of Australian Red Cross Missing, Wounded and Prisoner of War Cards. I haven't viewed these cards personally, but they might be worth investigating:

What source is giving you the possible typo, Sgt July?

is it the back of a photo, or ORB or a letter? That might assist us also

Re: Can anyone identify Sgt JULY, 59 Sqn 1942?

There seem to be a couple of references to "July" in the "old"? website number59squadron.com

This information was found in "cached" versions of the site.

This first seem to be an attack on September 12, 1941.

"The first attempted attack on enemy shipping by a 59 Sqn crew ocurred on the 12th, when P/O Boyce & crew (Sgt's Hogarth, July & Dunn) attempted to attack a 3/4000ton M/V in convoy with two E/V's near Dunkirk. P/O Boyce circled to attack but the bombs hung up due to the release switch not being armed. All ships fired on the A/C with 1 hit to the starboard engine cowling. The rear gunner opened fire with 40/50 rounds as they passed over, no results seen."

Boyce seem to be "P/O" T.D. Boyce although below he seems to have advanced to "F/O" T.D. Boyce.

Some 19 crews from the 59 squadron were transferred to Sumatra. (Su)

"F/O T.D. Boyce - Su Sgt Dodds (Obs) - Sgt Dunn (AG) - Sgt July (WAG)"

"Nineteen 59 Sqdn crews: Ian makes mention of F/O Boyce and crew arriving in Sumatra. However, they are not noted in the squadron appendices along with the other 18 aircrews in Dec 1941 as "pending posting overseas". It appears that F/O Boyce and crew were attached to O.A.D.U Kemble on 9/10/41 pending posting overseas, not in Dec. The ORB further notes that this crew were sent to West Africa. If Ian is correct, then eventually they were sent to Sumatra, which would mean that 19 crews in total were sent to Sumatra from 59 Sqn."

These crews seem to have first been assigned to 8 Squadron RAAF.

I think it "possible" that T. D. Boyce was Thomas Dudley Boyce. On this link, click on the red "Show More" box. It talks about F/O Thomas Dudley Boyce, RAF and the radio.

Note he is listed as in 59 Squadron here:

Re: Can anyone identify Sgt JULY, 59 Sqn 1942?

I believe Dodds may be this man, Sgt Roy Alexander Dodds, 985788.

He is listed as being in 59 squadron and also died on the Suez Maru.

Here is what the cofepowdb.org.uk site has on 'Juby". No unit is given, but he has the same "date of capture" and "place held" as Dodds, and the same death date on the Suez Maru.
