He 111 with Umbrella & Question Mark
Just scanned a photo at high dpi and it revealed the above on a He 111 fuselage; anyone have any ideas? It was early war so possibly Poland or France

Re: He 111 with Umbrella & Question Mark
One of the Wekustas? In the Ketley/Rolfe Luftwaffe Emblems book there's No. 672, an "unknown" consisting of a quartered shield with a thundercloud top left, sun top right, umbrella bottom right and ? bottom left. The text says it was on a Ju 88.

Re: He 111 with Umbrella & Question Mark
Chris, if you could post a low resolution of that photo, someone perhaps would be able to identify it more positively.

Re: He 111 with Umbrella & Question Mark
It is unlikely that posting it here would help as it is only just visible of 1200 dpi but I will try later

Re: He 111 with Umbrella & Question Mark
It's He 111P-1 1G+MS from 8./KG 27 during autumn 1939.

Re: He 111 with Umbrella & Question Mark
This is an unofficial marking set. It shows two elements of a total of four for Wekusta 1, normally enclosed in a shield with a color Christian cross shape separating the art. The other two elements consist of the edge of a dark cloud with rain and a lightning bolt, and next to it, a portion of the sun with beams of light coming from the surface.

Re: He 111 with Umbrella & Question Mark
Following on from Merlin's comment - is this not a reference to Chamberlain (Umbrella)?
Also Ries - "Photo Collection of Luftwaffe Emblem 1935-45" has a selection of individual aircraft emblems applied in a similar manner and position to this - see pages 174-179 - admittedly these are attributed to I./KG 27.

Re: He 111 with Umbrella & Question Mark
I thought it might be KG 27 but the letter under the wing is a white D (spinners are also white) whilst another photo shows another aircraft with white spinners and white I
