Identity of a B-17 wreck
Hello,
this is, I think, not an easy question. A german crashreport describes the wreckage of a downed airplane which was found near Oschersleben as follows: "Fortress II B 17 F Serie G 166 Nationality: American" What could "Serie (Serial) G 166" mean ? A sqadron code/radio call letter/engine serial-No./a number painted on the nose or fuselage ? The plane belonged to one of the 8ths USAAF groups, which bombed the Focke Wulf assembly plant at Oschersleben on the 11th of Jan 1944. Is it possible to identify the wreck with so meager informations? Can someone assign it to a Bomb Group or Squadron ?? According to sources, the only B-17 downed nearby Oschersleben that day was a B-17F-BO; #42-3057; 91BG, 322Sq; cr Hornhausen; MACR 1918. digedag1 |
