JU88 Captured St. Mawgan October 1943
Going through an unpublished manuscript of a B-24 bomber pilot I found this and found it interesting, but a basic Google search turns up nothing about this story, which is supposed to have happened in early October 1943. Everything else in this manuscript checks out and is well-researched using archival records...Just wondering if anyone's heard this story.

Re: JU88 Captured St. Mawgan October 1943
Better have it unpublished. Place, date or type does not fit any known episode.
Captured Ju 88s were flying in UK at that time. But thats how stories come about. |

Re: JU88 Captured St. Mawgan October 1943
A Ju 88 landed in error on an RAF base in late 1941 , it was tested evaluated and flown around on recognition tours . Perhaps the USAAF crew saw it on one of those and picked up a version of its 1941 capture while at St. Mawgan . I believe some shots of the Junkers in flight in German markings appeared in a couple of war films .

Re: JU88 Captured St. Mawgan October 1943
This would be the one that landed at Chivenor 26 Nov 41 which would have been 2 weeks before US entered the war so not this one as well. Looks like this have got twisted in the mists of time!

Re: JU88 Captured St. Mawgan October 1943
The Chivenor Ju 88 is covered off by ADI(K) 537/41. AIR 15/414 holds some nice supplemental papers on this incident.

Re: JU88 Captured St. Mawgan October 1943
As this aircraft was still flying up to 19-05-1944 when it was damaged on landing I thought it may have been seen at St.Mawgan in Oct.1943 . I believe it was returned to Farnborough around this time before appearing with the Enemy Aircraft Flight on a tour of USAAF bases in early 1944 .

Re: JU88 Captured St. Mawgan October 1943
How about that it was the Chivenor one on a later familiarisation visit to St. Mawgan? The narrator saw it there when he landed and was told how it first came into RAF hands. This account then conflates the two events.
