The Morning News from Wilmington, Delaware • Page 1
'CHUTES SAVE TWO NAVY FLIERS IN AIR COLLISION NORFOLK. Va., Oct. 7 (AP).
Parachutes saved the lives of two navy airmen this afternoon when Lieutenant Philip A. Tague and Chief Aviation Pilot E. S. Whitman "bailed out" of their two-seated observation plane after a collision with a single-seated fighter, nearly a mile in the air.

'Phil” Tague son Jr born jan 6 1931

Ensign William M. Walsh, piloting the single - seater, gambled with a broken strut and brought his little craft to a
safe landing on the naval air station field, while the other ship crashed.

-> This is believed to be Boeing F5B-1 A-8640

I would like to confirm Walsh on Boeing F5B-1 A-8640 if possible please

Re: US Navy Collison and Bailout Oct 7 1931

Walsh was flying F6C-3, A-7158, of VS-9S. His aircraft was the target for Tague in a practice camera gunnery flight. Unfortunately, both pilots turned simultaneously when the aircraft were very close together and a mid-air collision resulted. Damage to the longerons of the O2U led to loss of control.
