Ju 88 KGr 806 - 21 August 1940

Hi,

On 21 August 1940 two Ju 88 from KGr 806 (crews of Lt zur Sees Miehr and von Davidson) failed to return. I'm looking for information what was their target and time of start to sortie?

All the best

Greg

Re: Ju 88 KGr 806 - 21 August 1940

Hi,

a row of nuisance raids was flown on this day by small formations of K.Fl.Gr.806. During the course of the last raid (takeoff at 15.28 hrs) two Ju 88s were intercepted and shot down by English fighters - Huricanes of no.238 Sqn.

Regards

Robert

Robert-Greg's question was whether these aircraft were involved in a combat near Bridlington which is north east England whilst these 2 were lost south west England

Re: Ju 88 KGr 806 - 21 August 1940

Anyway this three-element section was targeting St. Eval airfield. One diverted due to weather and attacked at 16.30 hrs harbor facilities of Penzance - did one returned safely to base.
Bridlington? Probably 1 crew out of three-element section of 9./KG53 reported to have attacked harbor facilities in Bridlington in the late afternoon. In fact one He 111 of this section - it was ordered to fly armed reconnaissance between Humber Estuary and Flamborough Head - was shot up by English fighters and later crashed in sea radioing a distress call from LQ 05 East/2432 (approx. 100 miles E of Flamborough Head).

From what I remember the KG 53 loss was attributed to 41 Sqn

Re: Ju 88 KGr 806 - 21 August 1940

Yes, this claim was made by P/O Shipman from 41 Sqn who wrote in his combat report he shot down He 111 to the sea.

I think He 111 from KG 53 were at first attacked by pilots from 302 Sqn who claimed Ju 88 destroyed and Ju 88 probably destroyed in two combats. But when I read Polish combat reports I don't know why Poles officialy got this claims - they wrote German bombers were hit, they saw smoke from a single engine and lost a/c's in clouds.

Time are close as is location. Recognition was poor and I have Ted Shipman's personal account of the KG 53 combat which confirms the destruction
