Re: Photos Royal Aircraft Factory Aircraft

BE2a no. 273 was flown to Montrose (Scotland) on 21 May 1913 by Capt. Longcroft allocated to 2 Sqn. but deleted 17 Jan. 1914; the Farman behind is HF20 no. 274 (3 Sqn.).The squadron left for Amiens on 13 Aug. 1914 but 274 had failed engine on take-off so apparently left behind ( 2/Lt. Fuller).
If the caption "Larkhill" is right they were presumably training.

Nick
All I can add is that it was coded K with 29Sq

Since there is a known photo of this aircraft which shows it completely repainted, with the RAF s/n added on the fuselage, the s/n moved from the fin to the actual rudder, and most surprisingly the dedication now completely gone.

That was in my opinion very unusual to do, so I cannot help feeling a bit uneasy about the present photo. Fake? Doctored? No idea really. Just a general uneasiness I guess....

Cheers
Stig

Re: Photos Royal Aircraft Factory Aircraft

Thanks Stig.
What I noticed was the serial location, this batch was Wolseley-built with their own style ie. on rudder and fuselage as you pointed out; if you look at the fin it seems to have been either re-painted or replaced altogether ( doesn't line-up).
The "AIR HISTORY" site certainly links F929 with the inscription. It must have been a quite new machine in Clint's photo.......
Nick ??

Re: Photos Royal Aircraft Factory Aircraft

Still don't know what to do with that photo Nick

It is really puzzling and I also looked into an old C & C publication from 1983 where they listed this gift machine as unknown, which is odd considering what Clint has found is a post card.

It just doesn't feel correct.
Oh well, no big deal....

Cheers
Stig

PS: I notice the photo is published in the book Gifts of War and listed as "confirmed" as F929. Still don't like it....

Re: Photos Royal Aircraft Factory Aircraft

Hello,

From the Australian War Memorial site a photo of F927 bearing markings with the usual serial locations for this batch (as I now know!):
