Re: Personal accounts and PoW Stories for the Battle of the Heligoland Bight: 18 December 1939

There is a book on the subject by Robin Holmes entitled "The Battle of Heligoland Bight, 1939"

It might be a good place to start given that the topic is not something you see a lot of in terms of focused research that has been printed.

Adam,

Thanx. I do have that book. I'm looking for material that wasn't published in there.

Regards,

Larry,

Re: Your Post # 7.

560992 A/Sgt R T JOHNS, is actually: 560992/(56093) Robert Thomas JOHNS DFC RAF. Johns failed to return from raiding Duisburg on 21/22-2-1945 in No.35 Sqn Lancaster III ME367:TL-R. He became a PoW - BCL6/85.

Paul and Col,

Thanx. This should nail the last of the complete names of British crewmen. Now I need to find photos of the planes that came home damaged, and more accounts from the participants in the mission.

Regards,

Re: Personal accounts and PoW Stories for the Battle of the Heligoland Bight: 18 December 1939

Hello,

I want to note that I've got the account of Sgt Frank Petts published in "Bomber Command 1939-1940: The War before the War" by Gordon Thorburn. However, I'm not sure which a/c he was piloting. Does anyone have the SN of that plane and SQ?

Regards,

I hope that there is more material like this out there.

Larry, FYI: I live in Northern California but my wife is a bit of BBC Buff; she watches the British version of who do you think you are on YouTube--if you're interested.

Guys this is turning into sort of an "Allied" thread instead of Luftwaffe. Do you want me to move it to that forum?
