VVS Victories 25 May 1943
I hope to learn whether VVS records or memoirs might mention the shooting down on 25 May 1943 by Soviet fighters of two He 111 bombers from 9./KG-27 near Izyum (Izium near Kharkiv in Ukraine). One He 111 (Lt. Erich Frielinghaus) was seen to crash 12 km east of Izyum and the other (Stfw. Theodor Stolpe) was thought to have gone down about 18 km. southeast of Izyum. The action took place at 1340 hours.
I would be most grateful for any information on this fight. Erich Frielinghaus (promoted posthumously to Oblt.) received the German Cross in Gold in 1942 as a Bordfunker. He flew 326 combat missions with III./KG-27, including in the Battle of Britain and the Blitz. Best wishes, John |

Re: VVS Victories 25 May 1943
Hello John,
according to the Gen. Qu. loss returns from 31 May 1943 both aircraft were lost on 25 May 1943 in the area Waluiki, the German spelling for Valuyki. The WNr. 8049 was a He 111 H-11 (pilot Fw Walther Huber, observer Lt Erich Frielinghaus). The WNr. 160422 was a He 111 H-16 (pilot Stfw Theodor Stolpe). Regards Leo |

Re: VVS Victories 25 May 1943
In the operational document of the South-West front are per day 25.05.1943 according 17 VA - "in the district of Krasnyi Lyman in the air battle shot down three He-111 that had fallen on our territory."
Data 1 Guards Army - "enemy aircraft by single airplanes made exploratory flights along the way, dropped on Krasnyi Liman to 20 bombs. Losses are specified. In total there were 46 flights of aircraft." Probably talking about the Krasnyi Liman (Slavyanoserbsky district, Lugansk region, 48.722410, 38.971208)? Composed of 17 VA in this area acted 207 IAD 3 SAK. Journal combat action 207 IAD (11 Gw. IAD) very brief and there are no details for that day. It's 5 GIAP on La-5 & 814 IAP, 867 IAP on Yak-1, Yak-7. |

Re: VVS Victories 25 May 1943
From the war diary of the 17 VA - statement for 26.05.1943:
"the Prisoner - gunner of the downed plane 25.05.1943 - Fw. "ЕРИКПОЛЬ" (Fw. Erich Pohl - crew Stfw Theodor Stolpe) revealed: He belongs to the KG27 9 squad (III group). In early April, he arrived from Germany to Dnepropetrovsk for an internship, where he was enrolled in KG27, which was 80 He-111. During the fighting with 25.04.1943 losses were 40 aircraft, including 20 aircraft in the RAID of our aircraft, the other in air combat and antiaircraft fire. The commander - the Colonel of "ФИАТЕР" (?)" |

Re: VVS Victories 25 May 1943
Thanks all very much for this information.
Erich Frielinghaus's Wehrpass places his death as occurring 12 km eastwards of Isjum. A letter in his papers notes he was lost on a combat mission in the Isjum area. His flight, led by the Staffel commander, was intercepted by many enemy fighters, and Frielinghaus was seen to crash in flames. Likewise, Walter Waiss in his "Chronik Kampfgeschwader Nr. 27 Boelcke," Band V, pp.125-26 notes the destruction of the two He 111s from 9./KG-27 on 25 May 1943 and locates the site of the crash of Frielinghaus's aircraft as 12 km east of Isjum". Regarding the shoot down of the second He 111 (Stople), Waiss gives the location as probably 18 km SE of Isjum. Furthermore, he identifies the surviving POW as Uffz. Peter Faust (born 7 Feb. 1921) and states that he was held at Lager "Stalingrad-Begetowska", "Lazarett Linda," Lager "Oranki" and Lager "Stalin-Sawod" near Gorki. Faust was released on 2 Oct. 1948. Air battles can cover long distances. It looks like this was a running fight. An account by a participant (H. Nowak from 8./KG-27) in Waiss states that the target was the RR station in the southern part of "Waluiki." The weather report stated the target area was covered by thick clouds, which was why the mission was flown. The bombers flew singly rather than in tight formation. Unfortunately, the target turned out to be under nearly clear skies, which allowed the fighters to intercept. Nowak managed to hide in a thick cloud just as the fighters showed up. He blamed the bad weather report for the loss of the two planes. Kirche, I'm most grateful for your help. I'll post more information on the action as it comes to hand. Best wishes, John |

Re: VVS Victories 25 May 1943
it’s not worth it, John. These data are from published TsAMO documents, claims of fighters from the combined work of Mikhail Bykov. Unfortunately, there are no operations documents of 207 IAD, 814 IAP and 867 IAP in the public domain. There should be details of the air battle. According to HSU Hoodov Petr, they reflected a raid on Valuyki.
Best regards, Kirill |
