Is this a bombing range or firing range area?
Good night Gentlemen,
Could you enlinght me about this particular picture recently sold at Ebay, showing a low level Do 17 flying over this misterious things on the ground. Is that: a) Some kind of bombing range (for target practice)? If so, the crew seems very very low b) Some kind of air to ground firing range (for gunners to practice air firing or air to ground firing)? I had never seen such things depicted. Many thanks for any input Adriano B. Last edited by Adriano Baumgartner; 20th June 2018 at 21:07. |

Re: Is this a bombing range or firing range area?
Rémi,
This second Picture do confirm this is not a toy or a photo "montage". The original caption from the seller is: Original / 2 x Foto, Luftwaffe, K.G.2, Zielübung im extremen Tiefflug. For me who never saw such interesting device on the ground, this seems to be either: a) A fake aerodrome (beaten by a KG 2 crew); b) Some kind of gunnery device or orientation device on the ground I do not doubt the flight was at extreme low level, as you can see on this second Picture showing the propellers turning beautifully. Humbly yours, Adriano B. Last edited by Adriano Baumgartner; 20th June 2018 at 21:07. |

Re: Is this a bombing range or firing range area?
Ah, German version of the lo-flying "Mach-loop" in Wales. Might indeed be (mock) airfield to faciliate practice low-attacks (possibly with fake bombs too). Seems be Do 17 Z and after markings changed... you remember Do 17s in low-flying attacks in BoB on ... airfields!? A/c has oversize Balkenkrauz, suggesting Oct 1939 or later (after Poland), so likely Sitzkrig period (winter 39/40)
