Last pilot to become an Ace.

I've been wondering for some time, but which Luftwaffe pilot became the last ace from ww2? At the end of the war in Germany many pilots went to war with little traing/experience, did any of these late war pilots manage not only to survive but also had 5 or more victories?

Regards,

Mathieu.

Re: Last pilot to becoma Ace.

According to John Weal, Bf 109 F,G & K Aces of the Western Front, page 82, there was one Lt. Karl Broo, of 8./JG 53, who claimed his fifth kill - a Spitfire - during Operation Bodenplatte. Appointed Staffelkapitän of 5./JG 53 in March 1945, his 13th, and final, victory was a P-51 downed south-west of Ulm on 20 April. According to the photo on that same page, quite youthful looking.

The TOCH Experts can perhaps confirm the above, or otherwise.

Hi Guys

There are many later aces. You'd be looking at very late April 1945 with many units East and West. The last "100" ace was Galland during April 1945, i'll hunt around and see what I can find.......should be some within the Jet units to start.

Kind Regards

Johannes

Re: Last pilot to becoma Ace.

Hi Johannes,

I am aware that there were many late-war Luftwaffe aces there, but Lt. Karl Broo was one that I could remember.

Looking forward to your advice in this respect.

Regards,
Sinisa

Re: Last pilot to becoma Ace.

The best I can find is that apparently Uffz. Rolf Buck of Stab/JG 77 claimed a La-7 on 26.4.45 at 1644 hours as his 5th victory.

Re: Last pilot to becoma Ace.

Thanks for the replies! Is it known when Karl Broo and Rolf Buck became operational pilots?

Regards,

Mathieu.

Re: Last pilot to becoma Ace.

First flight Buck with 9./JG 77 was on 16.10.1944. Moved to Stab JG 77 on 19.4.1945.

Re: Last pilot to becoma Ace.

What data I have would agree with Nick's, Buck being credited with his 5th claim on 26-Apr. Not sure how much that actually means since most the of documented claims on or after that date either have a known ace name (like Broo) attached, an undetermined claim number for the pilot or no pilot credited at all.

Re: Last pilot to becoma Ace.

Fact is that Buck's claims were all confirmed in his LB by the Ia of the Geschwaderstab.
