Luftwaffe airman buried in Lenham Cemetery Kent
I was wondering if anyone has any details to help my research into the LW airman buired at Lenham cemetery.
I found this cemetery driving to some training one day and this lone LW man is here instead of Cannock Chase. From what I can gather there was only 12 LW aircraft lost that day, 6X109's and 1x110, plus some bombers? All the details I have so far is just this. Franz MAIERL 53534-14 German Air Force Died 20.10.40 Thanks in advance |

Uffz. Franz Mairl was flying a Bf 109 E7 wn 2059 of 3/LG 2 when he was shot down by F/O Mungo Park of 74 sqd. His 109 crashed in flames at Chapel Farm Lenham at 1400 hrs, although Mairl baled out the canopy of his chute was on fire and he fell to his death.

Re: Luftwaffe airman buried in Lenham Cemetery Kent
Hi.
According to my information, Franz Maierl was killed as a pilot in 3./L.G.2, piloting Messerschmitt Bf 109E, WNr 2059, coded 'Yellow 8'. The aircraft was possibly used in a fighter-bomber role. Regards, Andreas |
