Who shot down por. Wojciech Januszewicz on 05.10.40?

Who shot down por. Wojciech Januszewicz of 303 Squadron PAF on 5 October 1940.

He was shot down about 11.40 in Hawker Hurricane Mk I (P3544, RF-H). Polish pilot was killed in aerial combat over the Hawkinge.

Burning machine crashed near Stowting Common. Seriously wounded and burned pilot died on the same day.

Re: Who shot down por. Wojciech Januszewicz on 05.10.40?

Mirek,

Unfortunately, surviving records do not allow a positive correlation between a specific Lw claim & the loss of F/O Wojciech Januszewicz of No.303 Squadron on 5 October 1940. It was busy over Kent that morning & the fighting was intense & confused. In addition, not all German claims filed have times recorded. The best that can be said is that No.1 (RCAF) & No.303 Squadron were operating together & engaged 109s south of Canterbury around 11.40 hours with combats spilling south to the English Channel. Elements of II./JG53 were in combat with Hurricanes in the area at that time. In addition, a claim for a 109 thought to be downed on land near Hawkinge as filed by F/O Beverley CHRISTMAS of No.1 (RCAF) may also refer to the crash at Stowting but this is speculation on my part.

Re: Who shot down por. Wojciech Januszewicz on 05.10.40?

Thanks Peter, pity.

In September 1939 as a pilot of 111. Eskadra Myśliwska (III/1 Dywizjon, Brygada Pościgowa) he destroyed (this is confirmed with LW's records - 100 % demage) 3 LW's planes: Me 110 + 2 Ju 87, during the defence of Warsaw 1-6 September 1939 in PZL P.11c. He was one of the best Polish pilot in September 1939.

His luck had ended over England.

regards,
mw
