La-5FN, white "14"
Hi Folks,
can any of you tell me in which factory has Ivan Kozhedub's (24O. IAP), later Kirill Yevstigneev's (178. GvIAP) very famous white "14", "От колхозника КOHEBA Василия Викторовича" Lavochkin La-5FN fighter been built? Camouflage pattern could refer to the factory. It had to be either Zavod 21, or Zavod 381. This is important, since if the factory was Moscow 21, then the plane serials were 3921??14, if factory was 381, then plane serials were 381??14. (I need the serials.) Yevstigneev bellied this plane in on February 17, 1945. (Where, on which airfield did this happen?) After this incident Yevstigneev received his new, white "95" La-7 fighter. Thanks, Gabor |

Re: La-5FN, white "14"
Gabor,
you always ask such interesting questions. Zavod 21 was at Gor'ky , not Moskva. as far as I know Zavod 381 only built the La-7, prior to that it was making Il-2's in Kuibyshev (now Samara) and prior to that it was making MiG-1/3's in Moskva. I only know of one photo of this machine and it does not reveal enough of the camo pattern to make any kind of determination. |

Re: La-5FN, white "14"
Thanks ;-)))
As far as I know both factories produced the La-5FN planes. Haven't checked the map, but Gorkiy factory was near Moscow, if not, please forgive me. Anyway, Zavod 21 plane serial system was 39 for the La-5FN fighter, 21 is the factory number, 2 digits for the batch in which the plane was built and the last 2 digits of the serials were painted in white on the fuselage of the plane, like 14 - white '14'. If this plane was built in Gorkiy, then her S/N would be '3921??14' for sure. Similar S/N structure method was 381??14 for Zavod 381. Thanks, Gabor |

Re: La-5FN, white "14"
right off the top of my head I can't think of any one source that lists all the factories.
I have just sort of pieced it together from little bits and pieces here and there. most of that from texts on specific aircraft. i.e. LaGG-3 figures from books on LaGG's, Yak figures from books on Yak's etc. A.T. Stepanets lists all the factories that Made the Yak-1/3/7/9 and that text is available on the net, although only in Russian. you can use Babelfish at altavista or Promt at online-translator.com. dates for the Yak-7 and -9 can be found in the Aircraft monograph #14 by Robert Bock (AJ Press) are you looking for something in particular or ALL production for 1943 ? if you include everything (non-military) that could be quite a list. you can tell my favorites are the Yak's |

Re: La-5FN, white "14"
Thanks for the leads. I'm interested in where the main aircraft production plants were located, what they produced in 1943 and their production capacity and if the Luftwaffe could have dislocated production if a concerted effort could have been made. I realise that plants in the Urals and further east where beyond the Luftwaffe capabilty to hit but plants west of the Urals (ie Gorkiy, Kubyshev etc) were within range.
I believe from 43 onwards was when Soviet industrial capacity really started to get into full swing. Regards Andy Fletcher |

Re: La-5FN, white "14"
Andy (and others)
here is an intro to Soviet Aviation factories. sadly, it is dated 1921 to 1941 but we can hope there will be a follow-on document. I'll ask. http://www2.warwick.ac.uk/fac/soc/ec...22fulltext.pdf Gabor, it seems you are right Zavod 381 did build La-5's from April 1943 |
