One for our Russian experts - Pe-2s lost 11 Sept 1942

Hi guys

My records show that 1Esk/121-BAP lost four Pe-2s during a raid on Petsamo on 11 September 1942.

One source states that Uffz Lehner (three) and Fw Fobrose of 2./JG5 accounted for them, while another source implies that they fell to 8./JG5's Fw Beyer (three) and Uffz Klante - OR - where these two different actions on the same date?

Cheers
Brian

Hi Brian

I am not Russian expert,but I think it's 2 different fights.
Lehner and Frobose (5/JG5) against 121 AP
Beyer,Klante AND Beulich against 29 BAP (2 losses).

Excellent, Michel

Do we know identities of the crews of the two shot down aircraft of 29-BAP?

Cheers

Re: One for our Russian experts - Pe-2s lost 11 Sept 1942

Looks like the 29 BAP lost 2 Pe-2s on 11.09.1942:

1:
Lt. Georgii Vasilevich Ivliev pilot
Tomas Vasilevich Serebryakov bomb.aimer
Anatolii Vasilevich Filonenko radioman-gunner crew was lost to flak over enemy territory. (Can be fighter attack as well.)

2:
...........pilot
Sgt. K.tin Pavlovich Smirnov bomb.aimer
Ml.Sgt. Ivan Kirillovich Levakov radioman-gunner to fighters and flak, plane crashed on soviet territory, crew bailed out.

Hope this helps.
Gabor

Hi Gabor

Many thanks indeed.

Were the airmen named all killed?

Cheers

In 1st plane it says: plane was 'shot down by flak'. All MIA or KIA.
2nd plane: pilot wounded (no name mentioned as returned from own territory), Smirnov bailed out but died, Levakov went down with the plane (KIA).

Re: One for our Russian experts - Pe-2s lost 11 Sept 1942

Chronicle of Great Patriotic War... writes:

at the dawn 9 Pe-2 bombed Luostari. From 9 Pe-3 which were flying to bomb Banak four were attacked by enemy fighters (near Ischma?) and didn't return from sortie.

No unit is given for both groups, but this webpage claims that second group was from 121. BAP (and gives names of people involved): http://igor-ktb.livejournal.com/5765.html

Re: One for our Russian experts - Pe-2s lost 11 Sept 1942

Hi Andrus

Thanks for the lead - most useful.

I have a note that two Pe-3s of 13-AP/SF were lost on operations on 4 November 1942, but they don't appear in the journal. Have you any information, please?

Are there similar 'journals' for other areas for the Far North, including air operations?

Best
Brian
