Re: eBay: one "Schwarze(?) 10", Bf 109 E.
I made a post about that one over at the LEMB, the photo got to be from the winter of 1940/1941 give or take a month. During that time there weren't that many aces with such a high tally. Further, very few units used black numerals without outline. The only ones I can think of are 8./JG54 and possibly 8./JG51. Both units lacked III gruppe markings. There's something on the engine cowling that could be the faint outlines of the 8./JG54 bird emblem, but if it is, it is located further aft than normally seen.
Cheers! / Anders |

Re: eBay: one "Schwarze(?) 10", Bf 109 E.
To be honest I can't really see an emblem on the cowling. If there was we would be able to see it much more clearly. I mean there's no problems seeing all the other markings. I agree that there is some kind of anomaly occurring on the cowling though. Perhaps the emblem has been painted out and what we are seeing is the slight difference in colour between the fresh RLM04 used to overpaint the emblem and the older RLM04 on the surrounding cowling? I do not think the numeral is black. You can clearly see that the interior of the character shapes is slightly lighter than the edge. I think we are looking at either Rot 10 or Braun 10 with a black outline.
If I was going to take a wild punt at the shape of the anomaly on the cowling I'd say that whatever was there appears triangular and looks rather 3./JG2 'Horrido' shaped to me. The position, size and proportions seem to fit albeit now covered by RLM04. Purely speculation I might add and whether that can be married up with the other details I do not know but that could also just be artifacts created by the pixel grid in that area? Sadly only the original will help in that regard. |

Re: eBay: one "Schwarze(?) 10", Bf 109 E.
Agreed, the area corresponds well with the Horrido emblem but the rest of the scheme doesn't look right for I./JG2 imo. The area would be about right for the I./JG3 tatzelwurm too, but neither I./JG3 nor I./JG2 had a staffel with the possible colorcombination for the numeral.
Regarding 8./JG54, usually the cowling was painted yellow after the birdemblem was done and they didn't mask it very carefully so it could become a little blurred around the edges. Had it not been for the surroundings I would have guessed this aircraft to be another of those machines flown by JG77 in the Balkans with mixed up markings from multiple aircraft and units.
